| Patriotism Cloak or badge Samuel Johnson wrote that patriotism was the last refuge of the scoundrel. This described his view of the false patriot that used patriotism as a defensive cloak to deflect criticism. Some of the “scoundrel” type find their adventures take them too far and retreat to a position of emotional sentimentality so that anyone attempting to bring justified retribution on them is halted. This is similar to hiding behind a nun. There are many whose patriotism is worn as a badge of honor and invested in it is the emotional feelings of family and clan.  Because of the intense emotional investment, some have tried to manipulate and exploit this to obtain enthusiasm for wars and expenditures that benefit themselves. Think of how the white non-slave owners in the South were induced to fight for the confederacy. |
