Politics
Trying to get what you want

Sometimes people get involved with politics because they feel that it is a civic duty. After a short time, one becomes disgusted and leaves. The lengths people will go to to get what they want is shameful.

An author once observed in Washington politics that both on the left and the right were “true believers” that the majority on both sides found laughable. The 90% in the middle were there just for money, power, prestige or other advantage.

The phrase “office politics” implies that “politics” is not just limited to government. One can see the maneuvering to gain advantage in any collective such as government, corporations, school, and even church. Given the selfish nature we have we should expect that people would use each other as pawns to get what they want.

Perhaps one of the most effective wheeler dealers was president Johnson. He had come to the presidency after a long time in the Senate where he mastered the political art of deal making. He had once expressed exasperation with Ho Chi Minh (the leader of North Viet Nam) because he couldn’t buy him off with a deal.

One might find trying to understand the world much easier when considering 90% of the people are seeking some sort of advantage for themselves often employing deception as one of the tactics. Often done with the sincerity of self-deception.
