| Human Nature - Bad to the Bone Some liberal thinkers like Rousseau thought humans were born perfect and only exposure to civilization corrupted them. He anticipated that as Americans moved westward, they would encounter the “noble savage” whose purity had not yet been corrupted by civilization. He would have been surprised to learn that Indians were just as corrupted as anyone else.  Liberals have always been attracted to evolution from which they see themselves as at the forefront of morality, intelligence, education, and enlightenment. Initially they saw other races as inferior and even worthy of extinction because they, the other races, failed to evolve as well as they themselves had. However, after Hitler, they amended their view to say that those less developed simply needed to be educated. The liberal view that there is nothing wrong with humans is simply wishful thinking. If one takes a creator view of human existence, one sees a disconnection between humans and God. Ever since that disconnection we have been guided by our own selfish interests. The initial difficulties God placed on creation for our benefit ultimately proved insufficient to restrain our self destructiveness; And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. - Genesis 6:5  The earth, after having all but eight people killed by the flood, became environmentally even more difficult. These climatic hardships were sufficient for over 4,000 years to keep us from being like the people before the flood. However, our technology has made us increasingly free from climatic difficulties such that our indulgences are beginning to follow the pattern that was seen just before the flood. Western Civilization was Christian even if its rulers were not, and those that were often had a remarkably poor understanding of Christianity. This created a society in which people could fool themselves into thinking that man was basically good.  Now that the West is turning from Christianity, even though the legacy of a Christian culture still has some inertial momentum, the cracks are beginning to show and more and more people are beginning to show the natural man in all of us. |
